Soaps

The soap as we know today was found for the first time by the arabs in 19th century. Basically, it is made by mixing caustic soda with vegetable oil or animal oil. Soaps in form of liquids or solids are used for bathing, laundery, or for cleaning househould furnishings and tools.

Massive industrial demand on cheap product, soaps in the market consist of SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) as its basic material. SLS become the main material for making detergent. SLS is also named surfactant (cleaner agent).

Detergent

As a cleaner, detergent may be the fruit of technology development utilizing chemicals as the side products of oil refinery, and added with other chemical substance such as phosphate, silicate, coloring, and perfumes. Around 1960’s, the first generation of detergent appeared by using Alkyl Benzene Sulfonat (ABS) as surfactant that is able to produce foam. But since the property of ABS which is hard to be decomposized by land-surface microorganism, finally it is subtitued with "Linear Alkyl Sulfonat (LAS) which is believed to be nature-friendly.

In many countries in the world, the use of ABS has been prohibited and alternated with LAS. In Indonesia, regulation concerning the prohibition of the ABS doesn’t exist. Several reasons for the use of ABS in detergent are: its low price, stability in form of cream/pasta and abundant foam.

Chemical Contents In Detergent

Compared to soaps, detergent has superiority for its better washing capacity and stability on betel lime condition of the water. In general, detergent has materials as follows:

Surfactant. Surfactant (surface active agent) is an active substance that has 2 different tips: hydrophyl (water-like) and hydrofob (fat-like). Surfactant is classified as organic chemicals. It has a chemical chain that hardly degraded by the nature. This active material is able to lower water surface tension and to take off dirts sticked in clothes. Technically, it functions as emulsifier. This chemical is toxic if inhaled (by nose), absorbed (by the skin) or swelled (orally). In general, there are 4 categories of surfactant:

• Anionic :

• Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate (ABS)

• Linear Alkyl Benzene Sulfonate (LAS)

• Alpha Olein Sulfonate (AOS)

• Cationic : Ammonium Salt

• Non ionic : Nonyl phenol polyethoxyle

• Amphoteric : Acyl Ethylenediamines

Builder. Builder (former) functions for upgrading the efficiency of the washer from surfactant by non-active minerals that cause betel lime condition of the water.

• Phosphate : Sodium Tri Poly Phosphate (STPP)
• Acetate
• Nitril Tri Acetate (NTA)
• Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetate (EDTA)
• Silicate: Zeolit
• citrate : Citrate acid
Filler. Filler is additional materials for the detergent that dosent have the ability to increase laundery-power, but raise the quantity. For example: Sodium sulphate.

Additives. Additives are suplementary / additional materials to make products more attractive, such as perfumes, solution, whitener, coloring, etc, they don’t have direct relationhip with washing capacity of the detergent. Additives are added for commercial purpose, for examples: Enzymes, Borax, Sodium chloride, Carboxy Methyl Cellulose (CMC)

Soaps and Detergent

Soaps as cleaner dissolved with water in mountaineous area or ex-swamp settlement often cannot produce foam. Because, the nature of soap itself can not produce foam when fused in betel lime water (water that contains certain metal materials or calcium). But, in most cases, the use of detergent and betel lime water can still produce abundant foam.

Both soaps and detergent dissolved in the water in washing will form emulsion with dirts wasted when rinsing. There is a false argument saying that the more abundant the foam the cleaner the laundery. Foam with its wide surface may absorb dust, but since there is surfactant, cleaning is already done without tanpa perlu adanya busa.

Opinion saying that exaggerated foam indicates higher effectivity of the detergent is misleading. Thus, washing process doesn’t depend on the amount of the foam. Usually anionic detergent is added with other aditives (builders) like:

• Ammonium quartener group (alkyldimetihylbenzyl-ammonium chloride, diethanolamine/DEA). We must first realize that, these chemicals are frequently used for cleaner products for body treatment to maintain acidity (pH) formula. The group may cause allergy, eye irritation, dryness, and toxic if used for long period. Carsinogenic substance is already prohibited in Europe but still found in cosmetics formula.

• Chlorinated trisodium phospate (chlorinated TSP). This chemical has carsinogenic nature.

• Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). This substance may transform immunity system and cause damages on the eyes, digestion system, neurons, lungs and skin. Generally, SLS was found in effervescent products for body treatment. SLS is probably registered as component of semi natural products claimed to have been made of coconut oil.

• Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). When combined with other substances, SLES forms nitrosamine with carsinogenic effects on the body. A scrutinized treatment is required toward semi natural products made from coconut oil.

• Linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS). This chemical substance is carsinogenic too.

The Impacts of Soap and Detergent To Health and Environment

• The groups of ammonium quartener are able to form nitrosamine compound. Nitrosamine was known to have carsinogenic property, thay may trigger cancer.

• Chemical compounds sucah as SLS, SLES or LAS are asily react with ammonium quartener compound group, such as DEA and forming nitrosamine. Moreover, SLS was identified to cause irritation on human skin, slowing healing period and causing cataract in the eyes of adults.

• LAS is relatively easy to degrade biologically rather than ABS. LAS may be degraded up to 90%. But the problems don’t stop till here. LAS also needs processes. Thus, the tip of its chemical chain should be broken. Its omega ties must be broken off and beta-oxydated. So, it really takes time.

• According to an experiment, it takes 9 days for the nature to decomposize LAS. And it maximally reaches only 50%. Because of many households are just wasting their laundry wastes without previously process it, nature is expected to be able to handle this job.

• Before being wasted and mixed with clean water material, laundry wastes require a complex management. In order to decompize detergent compounds, wastes have to be gazed with sufficient ultraviolet ray and precipitated for about three weeks. That is why countries permitting LAS mostly have feasible water management system.

• The decomposition of detergent would produce benzena residues. These residues, when react with chlor, would form the very dangerous chlorobenzene. The contact between benzene and chlor is very possible in the manufacturing of drinking water, as chlorine were used extensively (where chlor is the main material). Chlorine functions as bactericidal in chlorination.

• Presently, water installation belongs to The National Drinking Water Company (PAM) and industrial wastes installation stil don’t have proper technology that is capable of processing detergents perfectly.

• The application of phosphate as builder in detergent needs to be reviewed, concerning that this compound may become one cause of eutrophycation (the enrichment of excessive substances) in rivers/lakes characterized by vast growth of algae and eceng gondoks, which in turn contributes to the shallowing river, a death signal for the life of the river inhabitants.

• In some European countries, the application of phosphates has been forbidden and replaced with substitutional compound which is relatively environmental friendly.

• The application of detergents has brought risks for human health and the environment. The most minor risk is iritation (hot feeling, itchy, and pelling off skin) mainly in the area that has direct contact with the product.

• This is caused by the high level of acidity. In a condition of being irritated or wounded, softener products that contain perfumes would only make the irritation become worse.

• Bath soap produces too many foam. The formula of detergent and soda ash was recognized as powerful to lift dirts on body skin. But if you apply this soap on your face, your facial natural oil would be removed also. Moreover, it leaves some drying residues on the surface of your face. And this may quicken wrinkles faster than it should.

THE BENEFITS OF SOYBEAN FIBER FOR HEALTH

To some people, food dregs are only assumed as unbeneficial energy source. Some studies showed that fiber or dregs are good for health, prevents constipation, cancer, colonal infection, lowering cholesterol, controlling sugar level in blood, prevents haemorroids, lowering bodyweight (as diet products), etc. Dregs and fibers are good both for health maintenance, disease prevention and therapy. There are some diseases associated with the lack of food fiber: obesity, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, aterosklerosis, diabetes, gall stone problem, diverticulosis, haemorroids, hiatal hernia, colon cancer, toothache and etc. Approximately two third of hypertension cases are caused by obesity or overweight problem.There are some reasons why food fiber may prevent obesity. First, fiberless food contains much more energy compared to those which is fibric. Fiber raises chewing intensity, slows down eating process, and impedes the velocity of food digestion. Fiber-rich diet may increase fat excretion and nitrogen through defecation. Consuming fibric food gives longer sated feeling than non-fibric ones.

Some food containing high fiber are vegetables, fruits and soybean. A research in America proved that high fibric diets –approximately 25 gram/day may improve blood sugar levels, lowering exaggerated insulinin blod and minimizing blood fat levels.

ROSELLE

This plant is known with the name Roselle (Hibiscus Sabdariffa L) coming from India. Other said that it comes from western Africa. This plant can be easily found in many places in Indonesia with various local names: asam paya, asam kumbang, and asam susur. In western India it is called Jamaican Sorrel. Roselle grows generatively (by seedlings) or vegetatively, with height up to 3-5 meters and flowers throughout the ear in each armpit after reaching the age of 45-60 days. Flower is the part of the plant often made for medicine and for food materials such as jam, candy, red tea, and juice. In addition, roselle is used for tonic for its important substances to the body, on eof the important is vitamin C.Substance and Nutrition
Roselle has high anticyanin and acid within it, thus the extract of Roselle flowers spout reddish and violet-like liquid with the main acid taste consist of citric acid and maliec acid.
Amino Acid is also contained in this plant mainly as arginine and lysine. When these elements go together in synergy with other types of amino acids such as glutamic acid, then it will become powerful to move body hormones that resist aging process. The benefits of soybean to health.
Soybean is one species of beans with the Latin name Glycine max (L) mer. Soybeans are widely cultivated in rice field area after harvest time. Among people soybean was popularly known as consisted of 2 varieties: yellow and black, besides these two we may find green soybean also. Green soybean is less popular and rarely cultivated, sme of the people know nothing about this species at all.

Bahram H Arjmandi and its collegues from Departement of Nutritional Sciences, Oklahoma State Univesity reported that post-menopause women consuming 40 gram soybean protein everyday for 3 months, significantly had their deoxypiridinoline (Dpd) excretion lowered in their urin. Whereas, Dpd is specific signal for bone cells resorpsion. There are two reasons why soybean raise bone forming: first, soybean isoflavons stimulates osteoblasti activity (bone cell forming) through estrogen reseptors activity. Secondly, soybean isvoflavon may increase the production of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1).
Several studies held by Susan M Potter et.al (Departement of Food Science and Human Nutrition Illinois University) had also indicated that as preventor or neutralizer for diseases, soybean protein supplementation containing 56 mg and 90 mg/day isoflavon for six months to 66 post-menopouse women. The results showed that its density of bone minerals in 90 mg/day group was increased, while in the group 56 mg/day group no changes took place.
The Japanese consume soybean approximately 35-200mg/day, this sems to be related with the small number of osteoporosis cases in Japanesse women. But in Indonesia, people consume more than 40mg/day isoflavon or equal with 13,3 soybean/day. This consumption rate may be able to help reaching the peak of bone mass but is too small to retain bone mass loses on women with more than 40 years of age, post-menopause women and the elderly.
Experts in China said that by consuming soybean rich food may reduce cancer risk kanker in woman’s stomach. An experiment on 1700 women held by The cancer Instuitute of Shanghai said that the greater the amount of soybean consumption, the smaller the risk to have cancer. This experiment took data from 832 Sanghai women with 30-69 years of age. They are positively diagnosed to have cervix cancer and tomach cancer during 1997-2001, while 846 healthy women with the same age group, after five years evaluating the levels of their soybean consumption, found that women suffering stomach cancer and consuming soyben less than healthy women. Therefore the phenomenon of stomach cancer in among Asian women is smaller thanthose living in western countries. There is a large probability that soybean consumption such as tempeh and tofu is higher in Asian countries. Honey is natural liquid with sweet taste produced by honeybees. It comes from floral nectar or other parts of flowers (extra floral nectar) or insect excression. Nowadays, many types of honey we easily find in the market with various trademarks and packings. Thus, we need to be careful when choosing honey, concerning its originality. Most of honey producers are courageous to give guarantee for their products, apart form the fact that their products are truly pure and original. Therefore we need a technique to gain evidence. Because it doesn’t guarantee us if we buy honey directly from the producers or the breeders then it means we buy the pure ones. Since there are too many bad guys out there, mixing the pure with sugar or chemicals or essences, anytime, anywhere.We may say that the honey is pure and original if from the beginning of production process till finishing or packaging, there is no mixing with any other liquids except the natural ones of the bees.
The purity can be analyzed through the contents which modern scientific methods had identified some of them, and some others can not be identified by science. The quality of the honey in Indonesia is regulated with Standar Nasional Indonesia (SNI No. 01-3545-2004). Thus honeybee products with SNI standards are the most secure and safe product to consume.
Nowadays, we can still meet persons who are hesitate of the ability of honey in medication and health maintenance, though Allah Azza Wa Jalla has given His recommendation. And reality and human experience have proved its effectiveness in medication.
The truth about the efficacy of honey has been mentioned in the Qur`an (An-Nahl: 68-69) and some hadith. The moslems agreed that honey is the best supplementary drinks. A moslem who is not sure about the truth of Quranic verses is hesitated as a “real” believer. How can a moslem rejects what his or her God said in Soora An-Nahl: 68-69, and all the hadith that explain about the efficacy of honey? What is his reason to reject his God’s revelation that honey is medicine for all diseases? (for example: some people prohibit diabetes sufferer to consume honey for its sugar content. It should be known that sugar contained in honey is not similar with that in sugarcane, etc, the fact shows the opposite: many diabetes sufferers have been cured or healed after consuming honey ruotinely).
Empirical evidences aso proved that honey is powerful as medicine. The most usual honey utilization is by drinking it regularly to maintain health (preventive) or for remedial purposes (curative). Honey also can be used effectively for curing external wounds by scrubbing it directly to the wounded body part.

What makes honey as medicine?
The truth about this is mentioned in the Quran. The holy book says that the benefits of this drink is eternal till the end of the time and will not be replaced by the opinion of some scholars who say that it is not good for health. Some scientific evidences had also shown its medical function: it has anti-microbial property for its high sugar content (most of them are fructose), low level water content (microorganisms need water to grow up), acidity, dan hydrogenperoxyde appear as a result of glucose reactions of the honey with the water. Hydrogen peroxyde is the main killer for microorganisms (anti-septic). Honey also had a unique nature as antioxydant (pinocembrin) & flavonoid that functions as anti-bacterial agent (bactericidal).

Can Honey Cure All Diseases?
In the Qur’an honey is mentioned to have medical function, as medicine for human (An-Nahl: 69) without any quotation that it only cure certain diseases. Therefore there is a likelihood that honey is suitable to all diseases, including modern ones which the medic still cannot identify the medicine. All Honey Had The Same Merit?
Since honey is produced by bees from different flower nectar so that the composition in one honey can be very far different with others. Thus it is natural if one type of honey is more suitable to certain diseases while the others are not. SKIN TREATMENT WITH SELF-MADE COSMETICS CREAM

This recipe was truly inspired by a skin care product -in form of cream- sold in supermarkets and stores. This newly found product has been tested and used with satisfying result. The benefits of this cream are to reduce wrinkles, and lift the death skin, fining and smoothing the skin and make it looks brighter. Previously, to omit wrinkles in the face we have tried using eggs whites (quail eggs are recomended, coz we only use eggs whites for one time, if you use chicken eggs there’ll be too much being wasted). Unfortunately, eggs whites are not effective because it’s wasteful (we have to throw away the yellows anyway). We have tried drying up some materials for producing natural skin cream and, praise be to Allah, we’ve succeeded. This finding is based on our personal experience, and previously we use it only for personal use. But now we present the recipe to you.1. Face cleaner cream with scrubs.

Ingredients:

Rice, rice flour, curcuma (temulawak), avocado, betel vine leaves or binahong. You make your own composition, some of these ingredients can be substituted, it is up to you, but in general we use .

How to make it:

1. Soak the rice in the water for a few minutes up to 1 hour, wait until they are soft enough to be blended.
2. Mash them using blender or other devices, curcuma, avocado, and leaves as you favor (temulawak and leaves are squeezed), blender the already soaked rice till fine, you may adjust according to your favor whether totally fine or a bit coarse.
3. Mix all the ingredients with rice flour till it become dough. Don’t let it too flabby. You may add perfume as you please
4. Mash the dough in form of granules and dry it up under the sun. Long-period drying is not recommended, use 2 stoves-heated woks, gas-fueled stoves are recommended.
The bottom part of the wok should have a contact with the fire directly, while the second layer of the wok only get heat conducted from the first wok. Roast these ingredients till they dried and become flour (powder). This drying method needs some exercises as we need some times to have some experiments. Keep it in a closed container. The durability of this product depends on how dried it is. The dryer the product the longer the durability and is able to be used anytime you want. Direction for use
Take your self made cream according to your needs and if you want, mix it with honey and water, till it become dough. The addition of honey is needed in order to gain its benefits to make the skin feels smoother and softer.

Wipe it to all parts of your face, wait for some minutes till it become a bit dried and scrub your face slowly with messages or press it from the inside (in the middle of the face, rubdown or press it).

Notes: If you worry that your skin would be scratched because of the brush of the grains, you may just leave the scrub and not using it.

Initially this recipe is not particularly made for body treatment, though you can use for this also, for we apply this cream only when the body has a fever. After using this cream, skin feels smoother, more flexible, cleaner, and lighter, feels like we have had a massage. Fine-mashed rice grains give the effects of small pressures on the meridian of acupuncture points entirely in all parts of the body.

Ingredients:
Rice, kencur (galingale), avocado, Javanese tamarind, betel vine leaves.

The Benefits:
Rice has function as a scrub that lift dead skin and soften the skin, galingale stimulates heat, widen the pores and smoothen blood circulation.
Fruits as skin nutrition have smoothing effects when scrubbed to the body and safe, without any scratching effects.

How To Make It:
After being shortaged, soak the materials, mainly the rice till it soft enough to be blended.

Make a light message on your palm of hands and feet coz in these areas there are some message points (reflexes) that connect to internal body organs. In the back side of the body these “reflexes” are found along the backbone line.
Scrub again and again, after that rinse them with warm water till clean.
Subsequently, drink the tonic made of cabe jawa (javanesse chilipepper), lempuyang, temulawak, turmeric, white or red ginger, the tuber of the leaves of daun dewa, tapak liman, brown sugar or honey. If you cannot find all, you may take some of them. The most important are cabe-lempuyang, temulawak, turmeric, ginger, brown sugar or honey.
